What is Organic Tatami mat ?
Tatami-omote is a natural material that brings out the original color, luster, and fragrance of rush grass. It is resistant to mold growth even in humid places, making it safe to use for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
To prevent the light green color of rush grass from discoloring during the processing process, ordinary tatami is soaked in mud after harvesting. This mud brings out the aroma of tatami and prevents the color from changing. However, dried mud on the surface of igusa tends to contain moisture and may cause mold. Organic Tatami is made by drying harvested igusa without dyeing it with this mud.
However, the production and manufacturing process is very difficult, and only a few farmers produce them. It is very rare and the production period is limited. Therefore, please understand that it may take some time from order to production.
Characteristics of Organic Tatami
Since no dust is generated, it does not stain the room and can be used safely by allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin. In the cultivation process, chemical fertilizers are reduced and only 1/3 of the usual amount of pesticides are used.
Compared to ordinary tatami, the color fades a little faster, but this natural tatami retains the original color, luster, and fragrance of the igusa grass. In addition, because natural igusa is used, natural igusa oil has excellent water repellency and antibacterial effects.
