About the history of Kishida Tatami
Established Kishida Tatami Store
Kishida Tatami Shop was founded more than 50 years ago in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture by my father, Keiji Kishida, who was trained by my grandfather who ran a tatami shop in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
My father had a very high pride as a craftsman and used to say, " Always try to do a beautiful job."
He was very strict about not only seams of tatami mats, but also cleaning up without leaving traces and taking care of tools.
The second owner takes over the shop
In the 1980s and 1990s, the tatami industry developed along with the growth of Japan, and our store was extremely busy. It was around this time that I started working as the second generation.
However, during this period, a lot of imported igusa was sold to make up for the large amount of tatami mats needed, and the price of tatami mats collapsed.
Pushed by cheap imported rush, domestic rush farmers collapsed across the board.
Pursue quality and technology
While a large amount of cheap imported tatami mats were on the market, I noticed that the core of the rush grown rapidly was weak and the surface peeled off easily, and some of them used coloring agents.
Contrary to the trend of the times, our shop does not sell cheaply, we use a lot of high-quality rush from Kumamoto, and put effort into improving quality and technology. Based on the high aesthetic sense and technical capabilities inherited from my father, I was able to win the trust of many customers.
I want to deliver Japanese tatami to the world
I believe that tatami mats have infinite possibilities. Because it is made of natural materials, it is gentle on people and has excellent breathability and moisture retention.
Nowadays, more and more people know about Japan through anime and manga. I would like young people from overseas to learn more about Japanese culture and technology.
